Streets.of.India come to SURAT…!!
This Sunday, our city, Surat, experienced something new. A group of photography enthusiasts, who have captured the streets of many cities in India, was in the diamond city, Surat. The group is called Streets of India and it has a page on Instagram named @streets.of.india and their page is followed by 1.76 Lakh people. Streets of India curates and publishes photographs of India and organises photo-walks across the country – to help Instagrammers engage, discover new places and showcase their talent. This group has organised Photo-walks in many cities of India, like, Delhi, Udaipur, Agra, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and a few more. This time, they organised a Photo-walk in the old city area of Surat. The main aim of the Photo-walk was to capture the essence of Surat, its streets, and its people and also to meet other photography enthusiasts and make new friends.
They started their Photo-walk from Gopipura area, near Subhash Chowk. The coordinators of the Photo-walk, Dikshit Mundra & Darshil Sanghvi announced about the Streets.of.India giveaway for people participating in their online photography competition on their page on Instagram by using the hashtag #soimeet #_soi. Some of the themes were Motion Blur Photography, Monochrome Photography, Streets of Surat etc. They captured the daily activities of Surtis. Gopipura, which is mainly a Jain dominated area, is one of the oldest areas in Surat. There are very many Jain temples, Derasars in Gopipura. Derasars are beautifully carved and decorated. The Jain Monks and Nuns are regularly seen around, walking along the roads of Gopipura. The architecture of the buildings, the narrow lanes, and the typical Surti language remind us of older times.
They concluded their Photo-walk at Gopi Talav, located near Navsari Bazaar area. Originally Gopi Talav was built in 1510 by Malik Gopi who was the governor of Surat during that time. Gopi Talav has recently been beautifully renovated by the Surat Municipal Corporation and since then, has become one of the favourite locations of Surtis for an outing and weekend hangout. At the end of each location, the participants gathered up for a group picture. The Photowalkers met, socialised and enjoyed clicking pictures of these places in Surat.
